If you’re planning on having a party any time this summer, there are a few things you may need: a swimming pool, barbecue, drinks, whatever you fancy.
But there is one thing you definitely need, and that is the debut album When The Night from Brooklyn producer, St Lucia.
When The Night draws heavily on the South African roots of St. Lucia (the project of 30-year-old Jean-Philip Grobler), who has joined a never-ending list of successful globetrotting musical producers to settle in the Big Apple.
St. Lucia’s debut LP is alive and buzzing with swirling synths, heavy club beats, and even some sneaky, sexy saxophone solos. It is perfect background music for lying on the beach and bathing in the sun, but after more of a listen, the album reveals a degree of sameness between many songs – the album’s greatest flaw.
Grobler ventures into dangerous emotional territory late in the album, where even the most passionate lyrics “An empty house/ an empty heart” do little to disrupt the relentless waves of synthesised pop.
On ‘Too Close’, Grobler throbs the lyrics “Let’s hope we escape” – the perfect four words to sum up the album. When The Night transports you away from your boring day job and plants you in an endless tropical dance party, and the escape is more than welcome.
