Decades after a golden era of pub rock that saw Cold Chisel play their first ever Melbourne show there – not to mention Bon Scott-era AC/DC, Skyhooks, Rose Tattoo, Mississippi, Little River Band, Mi Sex, Mondo Rock, INXS and countless others – Northcote’s Croxton Park Hotel has renovated the bandroom, completely overhauled the room’s artist spaces, bars and sound/lighting systems, and is preparing to unfurl an upcoming gig list to rival any other bandroom in Melbourne. Welcome to The Croxton: the bands are back.
Opening its doors as The Pilgrim Inn in 1844 as a stop over for gold prospectors on their way to Whittlesea, the Croxton Park Hotel changed hands in 1866, was painted bright red and renamed Red House Inn, while the owners built a horse track behind it. became a sporting club for pigeon shooting, cricket and football, boasting its own football club, The Rose Of Northcote.
Licensed in ensuing years by many colourful characters including a celebrity billiards player and a famous Scottish wrestler, the venue has been added to and renovated many times over the past 170 years; during its rock’n’roll glory days in the 70s the Croxton hosted live bands seven nights a week and boasted the [dubious honour] highest beer consumption of any Victorian hotel.
Now it’s back and the Croxton is bringing along some pretty special guests to christen the new digs. On Thursday the 1st Oct 10x ARIA Award winners You Am I – one of Australia’s all-time essential rock n’ roll bands – are lining up to play their first Melbourne headline show in two years. You Am I have not only had one of the longest and most successful recording careers in Australia, but three of their releases debuted at number one on the ARIA charts in consecutive order with the albums also receiving multiple platinum and gold status for commercial sales. They’ll be playing alongside Polaris Prize-nominated, JUNO-award-winning songwriter Bahamas and Opening for both is Australia’s Americana [albeit, with a Transformer-era Lou vs Big Star bent] prince, Fraser A Gorman.
