Australians aren’t lacking in options for New Years Eve music parties. If you can’t make it to Falls in Bryon, Lorne or Marion Bay or Southbound in WA then there are a plethora of gigs across metropolitan areas to choose from.

But Aussies love to travel and while we’re spoilt when it comes to having such events to look forward to every year the chance to celebrate another years end and beckon in 2014 on a picturesque beach in Mexico doesn’t come around all that often.

2013 will see the inaugural Young Turks New Years Eve Party take place and there has never been a better time to lash out and celebrate New Years in a style that has never previously been available.

With the highly touted London indie label organizing the festivities punters are assured of quality music.

Launched as an imprint of XL Recordings in 2006 Young Turks have released stellar albums from The xx, Holy Fuck, Chairlift, SBTRKT, Wavves and many more in their short tenure.

A festival, which brings many of their own signings to the beaches of Tulum in Mexico to celebrate seven years of quality music, seems like a natural step for Young Turks.

Tulum still has the tourist attractions and natural beauties of Mexican cities like Cancun that you’ve read about before. But Tulum is thankfully relatively less untouched by hoards of tourists.

What better way is their to bring in 2014 than conquering Mayan archaeological sites and listening to music on a beach?

Lineup

This electronic focused lineup is headed by British three-piece The xx who will be wrapping up their world tour in support of sophomore LP Coexist in Mexico. Alongside them is Canadian Clare Boucher aka Grimes who is expected to follow her 2012 breakthrough Visions with a new release next year.

With the recent release of Beautiful Rewind Four Tet will cap his year off in Mexico. Producers John Talabot, Pional, Tasker and Koreless will inject their electronic pursuits into the festival before 2013 is out.

SBTRKT alumni Sampha will continue to forge his own solo path after the release of his debut EP, Dual, with a spot on the lineup. Also expect Caroline Polachek and Patrick Wimberley of Chairlift to provide a heavy dose of synthpop for the festival.

Where To Stay

While there are a plethora of accommodation options in Tulum we recommend the likes of Cabanas La Luna, Posada Luna del Sur, El Pez at Turtle Cove, The Beach Tulum and Teetotum Hotel.

Make sure to book in early though. This holiday destination is likely to face its fair share of tourists over New Years regardless of whether there is a festival on or not.

Insider Tips & Tricks/Things You Shouldn’t Miss

Given the festival is in its first year there is not a lot of past knowledge to go on. The party will kick off at 8pm and run through to 10am on New Years day.

It is on the beach so expect some fairly decent weather during the day. Which means two things, keep yourself hydrated and apply plenty of sunscreen when the sun is out. However much of the festival will run across the nighttime and as soon as the sunsets the temperature will drop fast. You’ll need some warm clothes for the countdown.

The festival may only run for one day but that doesn’t mean you should leave Tulum as soon as the event is over. Check out the monkey sanctuary, Mayan ruins and various other beaches to while you’re there.

Side parties are expected to be announced closer to the event with DJ sets from Four Tet, Jamie xx, Talabot and Tasker.

When those around you hear you’re travelling to Mexico you’ll likely get an earful of ominous warnings. While that shouldn’t discourage you from what will undeniably be an incredible trip make sure you do some research and read travellers warnings. Exercise a fair amount of common sense as well and you should be fine.
