Everybody loves an easy target, and Nickelback appear to have stepped up to the plate to become one of the most hated bands in the world. That’s the impression you’ll get at least.

Now a concerned music fan has launched an online appeal and crowdfunding campaign to ban Nickelback from booking a tour or playing any concerts in London.

The anonymous crowdfunder was inspired by recent crowdfunding efforts that saw the Foo Fighters play an unscheduled show for fans in the US who had donated to the cause. This new campaign however aims for the exact opposite, to raise enough money to prevent Canadian band and internet joke Nickelback from performing in the UK.

“Following the recent crowdfunding of a Foo Fighters gig in Richmond, Virginia that did not exist, the Foo Fighters agreed to play the gig – subsequently traveling to Richmond and performing for thousands of adoring fans who helped make it happen,” wrote the concerned music fan.

“In a similar vein, we are attempting to ensure that Canadian “rockers” Nickelback do not come to London, England to play a gig. With your help, we can ensure that the band do not schedule any gigs here, do not attempt to come here – nor even phone here. ”

“Just imagine, thousands – perhaps tens of thousands of music lovers – all not witnessing an exclusive concert by Nickelback in London. It will be glorious. Legendary. Dare we say, game changing?”

Nickelback are no stranger to campaigns to prevent them from performing, despite consistently selling out stadiums and selling huge volumes of records. In 2011, the band was victims of an online campaign to have them booted off as half-time entertainment at a football game in Detroit that saw a petition garner over 55,000 signatures. The band nonetheless pressed ahead with the performance.

Anyone who takes part in the campaign will have an email sent on their behalf to Nickelback’s management, with the severity of the language used depending on the amount donated.

So far, the campaign has only raised $66 out of a goal of $1000. But with 27 days left, anything is possible.

Still, in these days and ages it has become almost de rigueur to disown a band if they should dare to commit the crime of becoming popular. Sure, don’t get us wrong. Nickelback’s music still sucks. And if you want to get laid anytime this century it’s probably best to steer well clear of them. But surely there are better things for people to be doing with their time.
