Homegrown electronic duo Peking Duk have racked up some mammoth achievements over the past 12 months. Between countless sold-out gigs and prestigious festival spots around the world, the Canberra pair unleashed their latest mega-banger, ‘Say My Name’.
Somehow, they’ve also found time to volunteer their time for a good cause, helping out with the Optus RockCorps initiative. The boys recently threw down a challenge to their pal Karl Stefanovic to get him on board with the RockCorps crew.
But despite their huge efforts on the music and charity side of things, the Duk went absolutely viral over the weekend thanks to a simple, 15-word Facebook post that broke Facebook. Put simply, Reuben Styles and Adam Hyde are fans of dads, but not Tony Abbott.
“Happy Father’s Day to each bloke with a kid… except Tony Abbott he’s a cunt,” the duo wrote on their official Facebook page yesterday, which as most readers will know, was the nationally recognised day where we give our dads a big old hug and a new tie.
The boys are pretty active on social media, but this particular post went on to accrue more than 32,000 likes, almost 2,000 shares, and more than 1,500 comments, many approving the guys’ sentiment, while others were slightly more critical.
“Show some fucking respect, he’s the prime minister of our country and no doubt a better father than you pair of bong heads will ever be,” one user wrote. “A Tony Abbott hate post, wow how original, hope your music is better than your humour,” another added.
Then there were some who just weren’t in on the light-hearted spirit of the post: “So the message here is that every bloke with a kid, including murderers, rapists, pedophiles is more entitled to a happy fathers [sic] day than the democratically elected leader of the country.”
The dispatch became so popular and incited so much commentary that Adam and Reuben decided to issue a follow-up, stating that they weren’t expecting the post to blow up the way it did and clarifying their feelings towards our Prime Minister.
“Woah just saw how crazy this post went,” the boys wrote. “We only wrote to share love to all the fathers out there. We would honestly just love to see Tony open his arms to gays and refugees.. And grow more heart in general.”
