“Thousands” of people are set to come together for Reclaim The Streets, a moving grassroots festival, which will take over Sydney’s controversial lockout zone for one day to protest the city’s divisive 1.30am lockout laws.
The family-friendly, multi-stage mobile street festival will meet at the Hyde Park fountain at 1pm on Sunday, 13th September and dance through “the heart of the affected area” as part of a protest against Sydney’s “draconian lockout laws”.
Attendees will be treated to performances from 26 DJs and local producers, including Magda Bytnerowicz, Simon Caldwell, Peret Mako, Alec Bonnici, KaoLudo, TK, Glossima and Ant Steep, with more expected to be announced.
“The lockout laws haven’t reduced alcohol-related violence. They’ve just moved the problem to Newtown and crippled our city’s nighttime economy,” said Reclaim The Streets spokesman Jack London.
“We need smarter responses to this social and cultural problem than treating the entire state like children. The decay of Sydney’s nightlife is a visible symptom of a much bigger problem: the influence of money on policy,” he continued.
“Property developers, casino owners, miners, road builders and bankers are tearing our city apart for their own gain. But while they’re acting like pigs at a trough with our governments’ blessing, the average Sydneysider is being left behind.”
“We believe our city should be affordable, open and supportive of everyone who works, lives or plays here. So this is more than just a protest against the lockouts. It’s a celebration of what our public life could be.”
