Melbourne Music Week kicks off today and as part of the celebration, Foreign Brothers are back with an afternoon of live music, body rocking and roller skating at the MMW flagship venue the Former Royal Women’s Hospital.

This year’s Roller Jam will feature a live set from The Public Opinion Six and the 30/70 collective followed by a monumental live jam session with the Foreign Brothers Core-Tet including special appearances from local legends 1/6, N’fa Jones, Average Rap Band, Silentjay, Jace XL, Mya Wallace, Zii, Pataphysics, Cazeaux O.S.L.O, Mouad Old Boy and many more. With Chris Gill (Triple R/Northside Records) and the Victorian Roller Derby League girls on board, the party will be kicking as much on the rink as it will be on the dance floor.

To celebrate the event and get you warmed up, the Foreign Brothers crew have put together a pre-roller mixtape full of funk gems to keep you rolling right through ’til the weekend. Check it out below and for more info visit the Roller Jam page.

Vaughan Mason & Crew- ‘Roll Bounce’

Nothing exemplifies the spirit of the Roller Jam better than this tune. The pace, the vibe, the roll and the bounce. It’s all there.

Southern Freeze- ‘Freeze’

Imagine Sade at twice the beats per minute, but just as cold. Southern Freeze came onto our radar from DJ Baltimore 81′ for a mixtape he compiled for our Roller Jam last year. This is a more insular jam, eyes closed with the floor all to yourself.

Ollie And Jerry – ‘There’s No Stopping Us’

This is a classic example of montage music. At the start of this tune you’re just another clown crashing into cardboard boxes on your first pair of skates. By the end of the track you’ve trained with Venice Beaches finest skating guru, balancing fish bowls on your head, dodging various obstacles and getting a wink from the “it” girl.

Marcos Valle – ‘Estrelar’

Brazil has a reputation for physical fitness and good vibes. Brother Valle’s ode to keeping a tight body is a welcome addition to any roller jam worth it’s weight in spandex

Candido- ‘Thousand Finger Man’

Much Love to J Love for wording us up on this masterpiece a few years back. This is another existentialist space voyage for the skaters and groovers. Solid Gold.

Surface – ‘Falling in Love’

There has to be a few joints that bounce for the couples skating the rounds hand in hand.

Midnight Star – ‘Don’t Park it on the Dance Floor’

Infectious groove is the key to any great jam, just when the lovers start to slow it down you throw this burner at them.

William Onyeabor – ‘Fantastic Man’

This one just brings the sunshine to the disco every time. West African solar funk for the movers.

Dr. Dre feat Snoop Doggy Dogg – ‘Nuthin But a G Thang’

This West Coast masterpiece has all the essential elements for the people to bounce, rock and skate. Roller Jams aren’t just disco. The funk takes many forms allowing parties like ours to go on and on to the break of dawn.
