Alex Lahey, best known for her work with Melbourne outfit Animaux, is striking out on her own and things have been going pretty well. In addition to garnering plenty of buzz, she recently scored a coveted ‘Best New Music’ nod from Pitchfork.

But the story of how the triple j Unearthed featured artist gained that nod is slightly more intriguing than just a bored Pitchfork editor who decided to go scrolling through the triple j Unearthed website one fateful night.

As triple j reports, drive time hosts Veronica and Lewis recently had the pleasure of interviewing Ryan Schreiber, the founder and editor of the influential music site, and decided to play him a few choice cuts from some Aussie artists.

He took a particular liking to Lahey’s new single, ‘You Don’t Think You Like People Like Me’, heaping praise upon it and bestowing it with the coveted title, which ensures the entire blogosphere will be talking about you for months to come.

“I was perusing Pitchfork at my day job today. Left work, started walking home, then all of a sudden Ryan Schreiber – founder and editor in chief of Pitchfork – reviews my music live to air on triple j with Veronica & Lewis,” Lahey wrote on Facebook.

“Thank god he liked it.” Indeed, as triple j notes, the write-up from Pitchfork described Lahey as somewhere between Courtney Barnett and Royal Headache, mixed in with a bit of Room on Fire-era The Strokes.

Lahey was also recently named as the recipient of this year’s $7,500 Josh Pyke Partnership. With all these accolades coming before she’s even released her debut EP, it’s probably a good idea to keep an eye on this one.
