After unleashing two absolutely monster headliners in Anthony Pateras and Mike Patton’s tētēma and Maynard James Keenan’s Puscifer, the organisers of MONA FOMA 2017 have now lifted the veil on one of their most jam-packed lineups to date.
Curated by the Violent Femmes’s Brian Ritchie, MONA FOMA 2017 is promising another strange and wonderful lineup with “a cacophonous contingent of new commissions, unexpected collaborations, and world premieres”.
“Mofo again challenges artists to collaborate and extend their practice, by using experimental instruments and techniques, or extending their skills in multi-disciplinary ways,” said Ritchie.
“Many of our artists this year are presented in ‘artist-in-residence’ mode, reacting spontaneously and multifariously to the challenge and potential of the site.”
“Artists and punters alike can interact and create within the context of several of our art, science and music installations. We’re looking forward to some weird and wonderful results.”
The one and only Peaches will be performing Peaches Christ Superstar. This event is an Australian premiere and a MONA FOMA exclusive and will see the acclaimed artist performing the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice rock opera as a one-woman show, with piano accompaniment by Mathias Halvorsen.
Other highlights of the MOFO weekend include mashup pioneer DJ Z-Trip, electro-spiritualist Moses Sumney, acclaimed ambient producer Pantha du Prince, Circuit des Yeux with vocals from Haley Fohr, and many, many more.
There’ll be plenty of appearances from beloved locals, too, with performances from Indigenous singer-songwriter Kev Carmody, electronica maverick Rainbow Chan, Hobart art-punk outfit All the Weathers, and Sonny Rollins sax tribute and collective Danny Healy Trio.
Punters will also get to experience lots of unique collabs, including Aussie rock veterans Regurgitator reinterpreting The Velvet Underground’s iconic debut, The Velvet Underground & Nico, with Seja on synth and Mindy Meng Wang on Chinese zither.
