In 3D is the latest release from Melbourne-based electronic-dance-rock group 8 Bit Love and Tone Deaf is lucky enough to have the exclusive web stream of the electric new EP. Fronted by the energetic-as-fuck Vito Lucarelli, the three-piece have been making waves on the national scene for some years. Having recently had one of their tracks featured on Underbelly and winning an APRA songwriter’s award, the boys have a lot to look forward to. Well known around Melbourne for their insane live shows, the trio have managed to capture the raw energy usually reserved for live shows on this latest release. Here’s out track by track breakdown of In 3D, the only record we can guarantee will get you dancing this summer.
Bad Taste
The kick off to the electro-punk record doesn’t disappoint. With a decidedly late 90s guitar-sound, and a catchy as fuck chorus, the opening track is bound to get stuck in your brain for days. The boys have been given the confusing label of a ‘dancier Nine In Nails’ and ‘Bad Taste’ both explains the sentiment and proves why. Heavy looping instrumentals placed under Lucarelli’s crooning vocals showcase what the band is does best: amalgamating the varied best of the 80s and 90s.
Genie
Proving to be a complete change of pace from the preceding ‘Bad Taste’, the second track, ‘Genie’ is by far the poppiest song on the record. Where the vocals were once silly and crooning, this time around the lyrics are almost rapped. It’s not exactly surprising though, while it is the lightest cut off the record, it still features 8 Bit Love’s signature thumping percussion and full-of-energy attitude.
Go Fuck Yourself, Summer
A hate letter to the sticky days of summer, it’s hard not to be reminded of the glory days of Australia’s own The Vines when listening to the rocky and slightly garage-y ‘Go Fuck Yourself, Summer’. Showcasing even more of the band’s musical versatility, this one is bound to induce some light head-banging come the chorus.
Apolocalypstic
Beginning with some heart-pumping percussion and a sexy, if scary whisper (think System Of A Down circa Toxicity) ‘Apolocalypstic‘ is the noisiest of the five tracks. If there’s any song off the record that showcases 8 Bit’s varied as hell musical influences, it’s this one. With metal-eque bass guitar breakdowns, pop punky vocals, electro samples all topped off with a cowbell, we dare anyone to name any local band doing what 8 Bit is.
Uma Thurman
Undoubtedly inspired by Uma Thurman’s kickass character The Bride in Kill Bill, the closing track – and also the only track without vocals- sounds like the trio are auditioning to produce the score for another Tarentino action film. Featuring an 80s sounding guitar solo Van Halen himself would be proud of, suffice to say, we’d hire them.
