We’ll be the first to admit that we don’t really get Glee. But what we do get is that the amount of power the show wields and influence it has in the music industry.
For instance, did you know that Glee has had the most number of songs in the top 100 in the United States ever? Yep, a total of 198 of their songs have made it into the top 100, while the next highest artist is Elvis Presley with a measly 108 songs.
So you can see why for any artist to have their music included in the show is a big deal. Musicians such as Madonna, Van Halen, Michael Jackson, and The Rolling Stones have all had their music featured on the show and the series’ cover versions have generally had a positive effect on sales for the original artists.
For instance, sales of Rihanna’s “Take a Bow” increased by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee.
Enter Australia’s rising star Gotye who’s popularity has exploded in the United States after his single ‘Somebody That I User To Know’ rocketed up the charts where it currently sits at #4. In fact the single has now been on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US for 10 consecutive weeks, it’s gone #1 in the UK, New Zealand, Ireland, Austria, and Poland where it stayed #1 for a record 16 weeks.
Now according to Pedestrian, Gotye’s star looks set to shine even brighter as a preview of the upcoming episode of Glee reveals his hit will be sung by recurring character Blaine and his elder brother Cooper, played by guest star Matt Bomer.
Given the song is about a broken down relationship it occurs to us as a weird choice for two brothers to sing as a duet, but hey we’re not the ones running one of the biggest television shows in the world. The episode of Glee will air in the US just a few days before Gotye’s scheduled performance on Saturday Night Live.
But it wont be the first time Gotye has appeared on US television. He made his debut earlier in the year when he appeared with fellow Australian-based singer Kimbra on Jimmy Kimmel Live following the unexpected success of their duet.
The success of that single has also helped propel Kimbra into the spotlight. The Melbourne-based singer must be thanking her lucky stars as she prepares to embark on an Australian tour after it came out last month she wasn’t Gotye’s original choice.
You can watch the preview of the episode below. The duet featuring Gotye’s music starts around 47 seconds in.
