We’re Melbourne’s number 1 pusher of the funkier sounds: funk, soul, latin, hip hop, afrobeat, boogie, jazz. This what you can expect to hear when you enter the store. Having just clocked up a full decade of funk we’re happy to report that vinyl culture is still going strong! We’re now looking forward the next 10 years.
Who are you and what’s your role there?
Lewis CanCut, I’m the Sunday guy.
Some details about what you will be doing to celebrate Record StoreDay:
We’re inviting all of our customers from over the years to come down and say hello on the day, it’s going to be a party. We’ve got live in-store performances from Melbourne groups The Putbacks and The Psyde Projects plus DJ sets from some of the city’s best selectors and biggest record nerds, 10% off vinyl, 20% off CDs, giveaways, special world record store releases limited to the day and there’s Northside T Shirt Collaboration with Burn T Shirts which comes with a mystery 45. Phew!
For those who want to go late there’s also an official Northside after party at The Order Of Melbourne featuring two of our staff members: DJ Manchild and Mista Rex playing the finest platters from their collections.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Crackpot’s The Wrong Party EP; a great local trip hop record. They actually have a brand new release out so take a listen to that!
What has been your best find on vinyl?
$1 Egyptian Lover in a secondhand clothing store! How much fun can $1 buy?
What is your most prized record?
The Avalanches – Since I Left You12″ This record turned me on to music in the beginning. The fact that they’re from Melbourne combined with how unique their sound was at the time made this a mind blowing single.
What kind of records did you steal from parents/older siblings?
My parents were into rock, classical, folk, basically all kinds of white music. Finding James Brown in my teens was quite a discovery.
Where do you source the records you sell in the store?
DJs collections, trips to NY, newly released records straight off the press, boxes of second hand Latin from Miami, basements, op shops, we’ll take it all!
Is there a record you’ve been on the prowl for that you’re still hoping to find?
One day I’ll the Larry Levan mix of Feel Up by Grace Jones. Not a $500 copy on ebay but a neglected copy hiding in a junk shop.
What system do you listen to your vinyl on?
I play discs on my old Technics 1200s
Where can we find you?
