Whitehouse have unleashed themselves on to the airwaves with “PM Gonna Save Us” off their debut album entitled ‘A Funky Intervention’.
‘PM Gonna Save Us’ was originally written during the military intervention in Aboriginal communities across the Northern Territory back in 2007.
At the time the Howard government and the media were making paternalistic statements about rescuing the children from rampant sexual and physical abuse and alcoholism in Aboriginal communities.
Aboriginal people across the country were outraged because this was not the case in many Aboriginal communities, yet they were all tarred with the same brush and labeled dysfunctional.
Four years on and this song still has relevance. Even though the intervention has faded out of the media spotlight and consequently out of the consciousness of most Australians, all Aboriginal communities in the NT are still under income management and a scrapped permit system that used to protect communities from mining companies and tourists.
This is a direct result of policies born out of the military intervention.
