Dave Graney has been releasing albums like a demon the last 20 years.

From the seven albums he recorded with the Coral Snakes, to four as The Dave Graney Show, a few with his partner in crime Claire Moore and a couple as the Lurid Yellow Mist (featuring both Graney and Moore); now we have his latest release in Dave Graney and the mistLY.

What we have is the familiar Graney sound. With the bard from Mt. Gambier on guitars with Stu Perera, Clare Moore on drums, with Stu Thomas on bass while vocal duties are handled by most of the ensemble.

You’ve Been On My Mind is a walk with Dave Graney looking at his life as he usually does. A stroll through his mind and his first new songs since his 2009 release, Knock Yourself Out.

“Life’s A Dream” has him crooning about where you can find yourself among the big questions against a quasi-psychedelic soundtrack. Both his music and lyrics do indeed take you to a dreamy place.

Even when he’s intoning the title to “Playin’ Chicken” over and over again, the music has a melody that is hard to stay with, but leaves you wanting to hear more.

As Graney says on his web page, “this bunch of songs was recorded quickly, just the way I like it. It’s not about layers of sounds, it’s just the simple setup of the band in the room and the songs;” and that’s exactly what we get.
