With an explosive orchestral opening track that would make Arcade Fire proud, Cogel’s Nowhere Near EP immediately captivates your attention.

Relatively new to the scene, this Sydney five-piece have certainly wasted no time with finding their footing. Make no mistake about it, they are indeed an indie band, but don’t let that influence your opinion on their talents before giving them a chance. To put it bluntly, their tunes have mega appeal.

Not only does this record contain the band’s latest single “The Bug”, but tracks such as “Out Of Touch” or “Felusine” make for perfect future single releases with their catchy melodies and memorable choruses. Not to mention the title track, which sends you to sleep for all the right reasons, as Alex Cameron’s violin shines moreso than ever.

Improving with each listen, these songs are a true reflection of the diversity of Cogel’s songwriting. A notable quality of the lyrics here is that despite their simplicity, they have the ability to remain with you long after the song is over. It’s no surprise Gotye hand-picked them for a support slot last year.

Though only 5 tracks in total, each one seems to bring its own story and originality to the table. However they all still manage to flow well together, and take you on an enjoyable twenty minute journey that will leave you craving their eventual debut full-length release.
