2012 has been a big year for indie rock four-piece The Aves.

Being selected to play Canada’s NXNE festival led to them lingering around Canada and The United States.

It saw the band playing shows at any venue they could and also resulted in their latest EP Anywhere Else being produced in Brooklyn.

The beauty about these Adelaide natives is their simplicity.

Whether it’s their Strokes-like ability to relay their guitar-work between their two guitarists as noticeable in “In Vogue” or the bassline that seamlessly connects the album’s intro sample to the core song, The Aves show their true talent through minimalism.

Frontwoman Lucy Campbell tells her stories through each song in such a way that a picture is painted, but there is still a sense of mystery.

Who is the leather pants-wearing, outdoor-dancing man known she sings of in “Lionel”?  If the person spoken about in “In Vogue” is so domineering, why are they so desirable?

While there are just three tracks on the release, it may leave a few more diehard fans wanting more. For newer fans of the band though, it may be just the right amount to make the leap to a dedicated follower.

Fans of The Who, The Velvet Underground, and The Strokes best not look past this release: it might be right up your alley
