Jill Birt, known for her work with the iconic Australian band The Triffids, kicks off the proceedings of this latest Aussie compilation with “Fete Day”.
With a dark and ominous groove, you can understand why this song resonates with the sound that band made popular decades ago.
“Truly Julie And Terry” by The Jac, which is Joe Algieri on all instruments and vocals, is a lovely piece of pop fabric.
Shaun Carlson’s “You Don’t Want Me In The Morning” and “Back On My Feet” by Richard Lane are warm and filled with jangly guitars that make you want to discover more tracks by each of these artists.
“Drug Squad 93” brings a glass of country infused picking and harmonica blowing by Kevin Smith that you will enjoy sipping.
Smith has been involved with Grinderman and Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds and this track will more than likely be found on his solo record My Angel Rides Dark Horses to be released in 2013.
Robbie Jalapeno And The Faceless Bureaucrats, besides having the best band name seen in a while, deliver the title track from their latest release, “Old Baxter”.
Some swamp funk mixed with excellent violin playing and the resonant vocals of Jalapeno entice you and drag you into this mesmerising story.
The sampler ends with the grooving gallop of “Walk Away” by Salvage Diver which is one that you will find spinning in your head long after the music is over.
Western Australian rock music has always had a quality of space within the music and that is heard here.
Excellent song writing and quality playing make this release an excellent place to discover some new grooves made in your own backyard.
