Imagine laid-back electro-pop with a tropical melodic 80s flair.

Fortunately, the latest release from Sydney-based pop outfit Panama means you don’t have to. Their latest EP is a collection of six songs that would make a suitable soundtrack for the warm and relaxed days of summer.

Said to be an ‘incarnation’ of lead vocalist Jarrah McCleary’s former band The Dirty Secrets, Panama have created quite a buzz in their short time together.

First-single ‘Magic’ harnesses the endearing qualities of McCleary’s retro-inspired vocals whilst playful synths and percussion cement the song’s dance vibes.

Title track ‘It’s Not Over’ is somewhat darker in its sound than the rest of the record and comes as a refreshing contrast against the boppy beats of neighbouring tracks.

Throughout the EP Panama succeed in creating infectious hooks for listeners to enjoy.

‘We Have Love’ and ‘Heartbeat’ are standout examples that will keep your sonic mind content with catchy choruses detailing the trials of love. However, with high points come low points and at times the release wears a little thin as some tracks grow tired a little too quickly.

Be sure not to let the electro-pop label fool you – these are not fist-pumping anthems to jump around to, rather fun and smooth beats with a definite 80s inspired sound that will have you swaying to the rhythm of the summer breeze.

Admittedly this isn’t a groundbreaking record, yet there is something about Panama that makes them worthy of a cosy little nook in your music library.

Keep calm and enjoy.
