Artisan Guns’ first venture into full-length album territory is one that will surely leave fans satisfied.

Its title Coral is a fitting description for the beauty that lurks within the darkest depths of lead singer Matthew Hope’s lyrics, with his name an ironic counterpart for the sombre themes that exist on the record.

Delving into the topic of nostalgia, in particular the stress of adolescence and moving forward from it, Hope undermines the brutal honesty of his words with a voice that resonates Morrissey.

Opening track “Rain In Summer” successfully provides a solid indication of what will follow, with the addictive chorus we’ve come to expect from this New Zealand collective.

Guitarist Jonathan Pearce excels on “Swim”, with a distinguished intro that peacefully floats by with the current of the track, which can easily send listeners to sleep with a smile on their faces.

It is a shame that although each song possesses its own unique quality, they are all just as much similar as their predecessor.

The only exceptions being the single “Pulled You In” and “Crystal”,  which both possess a continued upbeatness throughout that highlights the band’s unquestionable song-writing talents.

Coral produces a quality collection of melodies and hooks that linger around in the mind for days after each listen.

Though tedious at times, the balance of blending uplifting harmonies with intimate subject matter is seemingly perfected by a group who have yet to reach their full potential.
