Travelling all the way to Atlanta, Georgia to work once again with producer Jeff Tomei (Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, Matchbox 20), as well as having their single ‘Reminiscence/Two Wrongs’ played on commercial and independent radio across the globe, is an indication that 2013 will be a good year for Hailmary.

The Perth band’s debut album opens with quite a slow title track which doesn’t really do justice for or showcase what Hailmary’s sound is all about. It does help to show their diversity though, especially when contrasted with the next track on the album.

‘Yellow Light Of Death’, definitely the heaviest song on the record, kicks things into gear and truly presents their grunge-rock sound, which is all about the banging of the drums, deep vocals and killers guitar riffs.

The third track ‘Control Freak’ gives the album another twist, starting out with some higher, lighter vocals that directly contrast with the heavier vocals heard not moments before.

From there on, most of the tracks can be characterised with those lighter vocals, heavy drum beginnings and killer riffs within the middle of the song, with ‘Wake Up’ really bringing that Alice In Chains influence to light.

A quite clean, well produced album, that not only presents life in a nutshell in its title, but throughout the record.

It is a piece of rock recording that any alternative music lover would enjoy, with edgy song lyrics that are sure to get stuck in your brain.

It’s possible this record could be the game changer for the foursome.
