Dripping with blues and early psychedelic influences, Melbourne’s House Of Laurence deliver a truly impressive first EP; mature and evolving, the band have finally brought the buzzing blissed out jams down to the south coast.
With heavy influences from Perth bands Tame Impala and Pond, this trippy flavour of rock is certainly buzzing at the moment.
Saying that, House Of Laurence have certainly blended the face-melting guitar riffs with blissed out moments fine tuning their mix of soft and loud perfectly and concisely.
With the chiming bell start of lead single ‘Such A Fool’ we’re transported into a colourful daydream complete with wailing guitars and repetitive lines.
Changing pace with blues number ‘Squeeze Lightly’, which starts off as a bass driven guitar number quickly swaps to a slowed down jam complete with sing-along lyrics, a concise yet complicated trip of tunes all blended into one.
The somewhat Pink Floyd-inspired ‘Silken Dream’ begins with cymbals crashing and quiet melodies then picks up with jangly guitars and a swift drum line that makes you feel like you’re spinning in slow motion.
That spinning feeling doesn’t disappear with ‘Free’ and ‘Never Did Fall’, the latter showing off some impressive rhythms that would only be better if they were played live in a loud outdoor festival.
The stand out track is the album closer ’86 Tour (Drifting Haze)’ which is exactly what the title suggests: a haze of guitars eliciting an acid trip of emotions.
Hopefully we will see House Of Laurence popping up on the festival circuit soon after the release of this smart and refined EP.
