With such a distinct sound and strong live presence, its difficult to believe that Sydney pop rock band Breakaway started up only a short year ago. After chance meetings through mutual friends, Rich Mammoliti (guitar), Miki Bonic (guitar), Matt McNeil (drums) and Mitch Borton (bass) found themselves jamming in living rooms and seeing potential in the result. The boys soon took to the internet, hoping to scope out a singer to fill the final gap in their line up. Success arrived in the audition of leading man Sam Biland, bringing the perfect balance of grit and sentiment to an already highly accessible, developed sound.
Within a month, the band’s sudden momentum and drive had resulted in six songs. Opting to record at Electric Sun Studios with Dave Petrovic (Tonight Alive, Heroes for Hire, Mission in Motion,) the boys laid down their tracks over two weeks and emerged with the debut EP, ‘One Minute/One Moment.’ The EP embodies their wide range of influences, ranging from iconic pop-rock predecessors to today’s alternative, radio-ready music stalwarts including 30 Seconds To Mars, Paramore, and The Getaway Plan. Off the back of a successful first single – ‘Here I Am’ – the boys captured the attention of the Frontline Agency, who saw major potential and were quick to sign them.
The new single ‘AT THE WOLDS’ END’ transcends the typical, predictable pop-rock sound with its infectious melodies, sing-along choruses and smooth, unique hooks. Biland describes the song as a window into the emotional strain at the end of a relationship and “the paradox of missing and hating someone at the same time…[and the] frustration of realising it’s because you still care.”
Breakaway are charging ahead and are already laying out the framework for a return to Electric Sun Studios in July to begin sessions for their debut album, but before they do that, catch them up and down the east coast of Australia on the below dates:
