The Machine Gun Kelly Australian Tour 2013 has been announced, with the Ohio MC the next in line for Niche and Live Nation’s series of debut Australian hip hop tours.
After bringing the likes of A$AP Rocky, Yelawolf, and Mac Miller to Australian shores, the promoters now bring Machine Gun Kelly. Having already receiving acclaim from cultural tastemakers, MGK was awarded MTV’s ‘Hottest Breakthrough MC’ for 2011, and is undoubtedly one to watch.
At just 23 MGK already has an enviable back catalogue of music, releasing his first mixtape Stamp of Approval in 2006 at just 16. Since then he has released a further seven mixtapes, an EP and his debut studio album Lace Up, released in 2012 through Diddy’s ‘Bay Boy’ label.
MGK makes his debut trip to Australia off the back of his latest mixtape Black Flag released in June of this year. Featuring guests such as Pusha T, Meek Mill, Wiz Khalifa & French Montana, the mixtape is available for free download here.
Born Colson Baker in Houston, Texas, MGK lived in almost a dozen places including Egypt, before moving to Denver, Colorado with his father after his mother began a new life with a new man. “I don’t have a relationship with my mom, she left when I was nine years old,” says MGK.
In Denver, the Bakers lived with MGK’s aunt. Though the father and son had each other, they couldn’t lay claim too much else. As his dad fought depression and unemployment, the young MC split his time between wearing two school outfits and being bullied by the neighbourhood kids.
“I used to stand out because I was tall and I couldn’t really fight back then,” says MGK. “Then I got tired of getting beat up so I started fighting people with my words instead. I got the name Machine Gun Kelly because of my rapid-fire delivery when I was 15 and started doing shows.”
