You’ll probably think that the first track by this Western Australian songstress sounds very familiar, as you may have heard her smooth, endearing vocals floating of speakers and pimped-up subwoofers everywhere, after producer Ivan Gough sampled her vocal loop in 2012 electronic hit ‘In My Mind’.
Georgi Kay’s first solo compilation of songs comes in the form of EP In My Mind, a mix of piano ballads artfully woven in with extreme vocal prowess and impeccable production. Despite her youth, she’s been heavily involved in music for the past few years, and this experience is evident in her music.
The title track is seamlessly followed by the more upbeat ‘Ipswich’, a tune characterised by a chilling contrast between acoustic guitar chord strumming and haunting, enticingly dark vocals.
The beautifully crafted ‘Joga’ begs to be listened to, with its simplistic guitar and intricate harmonies encouraging a wandering, pensive mind.
‘Right Next To You’ comes off sounding like a more generic, indie synthetic-pop song with relatively uncreative lyrics despite its initial bluesy undertones.
Luckily, the simplistic piano intro and heartfelt vocals of ‘Breakfast In Bedlam’ pulls on your heartstrings before building up slowly to dramatic sound layers and dropping back to piano to finish.
The EP is closed off with ‘Lionheart’, yet another beautifully crafted, emotion-drenched ballad. Not only has Georgia Kay met the ever-increasing standard of music coming out of the indie scene in Perth, she has completely surpassed it, with bags of potential left to spare.
