The Crooked Fiddle Band Australian Tour 2013 has been announced in the lead up to the release of their second full lenght album.

Following the recent double A-side teaser release of The Vanishing Shapes of a Better World/TheDeepwater Drownings Part I, The Crooked Fiddle Band officially announce the release of their second LP, Moving Pieces Of The Sea, recorded in Chicago with the legendary Steve Albini (Nirvana, The Pixies, Gogol Bordello, Joanna Newsom).

From their roots in post-rock, prog, folk, world music and punk, and displaying an inherent ability to withstand easy classification, with this release the band has evolved their own intensely distinctive sound.

Cinematic, expansive and epic; Moving Pieces Of The Sea suggests fantastical imagery and narrates a quest through futuristic landscapes. Sometimes pastoral, sometimes toppling, sometimes frantic, sometimes chilling, enigmatic, melancholic, jarring and grating – but simultaneously Zen, and with uncompromised integrity.

Whilst based in Sydney’s inner west, early writing sessions took place in a Blue Mountains retreat and continued during a mammoth European tour. Inspired by fjords in Norway, lakes in Finland, and streams through deep forests of Sweden, the evolving tunes became infused with water imagery. The wild settings enlivening the band’s already ecstatic and twisted energy and led to the most physically and mentally exhausting as well as exhilarating work the group had ever attempted.

The sum of many parts, it is during the writing process that the four players become a united conduit – melding, alchemising and fossicking for the best way to navigate the creation of each composition, including a number of unconventional recording techniques and practices.

Drummer Joe Gould remarks, “we chose Electrical Audio because of the chance to record live to tape – to try and capture the energy of our shows with an engineer who has worked with both heavy drums and acoustic instruments. But the idea of destroying previous takes by recording over them is anathema to modern recording. It’s both destructive and exhilarating. Not having a safety net really keeps the adrenaline going.”

This desperate finality bled into the captured music: adding urgency, fervour, darkness and a heightened sense of emotion.

Due for release 1 October on Bird’s Robe Records – the Sydney-based label more often associated with prog rock acts like The Red Paintings and Sleepmakeswaves – marking an exciting new chapter for the label and the
band alike.
