Call it crazy, but we’re convinced one of the biggest joys in life and music is a good remix or cover. Why? Because it means a musician loves a song so much that they’re willing to publicly re-interpret it. To celebrate how special that is we’re taking a look at some of the best new remixes and covers to come out of Australia and beyond. Check out this week’s picks.
Jon Hopkins Remixes Daughter’s ‘Home’
Taken from the band’s 2011 EP The Wild Youth this new remix comes of the back of Jon Hopkins’ much successful reworking of Purity Ring’s ‘Amenamy’, and considering he’s coming out for Meredith Music Festival in December , it’s time everyone become well-aquainted with the man.
Alt-J Remix Portugal. The Man’s ‘Modern Jesus’
And it’s beautiful. Adding more synthy textures as well as jumbled vocal lines, the remix by Alt-J’s Thom Green, has an Onra-esque vibe to it as well as a hella cool break down. Amazing!
Ava Luna Cover Icona Pop’s ‘I Don’t Care’
We never thought we’d be able to stand this song after its overuse in every ad campaign of 2013, but if anyone could do it it’s Becca Kauffman and her band Ava Luna. Adding a punky element bound to make any Riot Grrl, well, riot, this has to be one of the best song transformations we’ve seen in a while.
Jagwar Ma Remix Angel Haze’s ‘Echelon’
In keeping with the theme of taking re-interpretation the the max, Sydney’s Jagwar Ma have taken Angel Haze’s single and slooowwwedddd it down majorly turning it from a very now RnB tune a to a super ’90s club track. It’s not shiny any more! It’s dirty as hell.
Paper Kites Cover Disclosure & London Grammar’s ‘Lose My Mind’
The indie-folk darlings decided to tackle something a little tricky for last week’s Like A Version. While the four-piece are known for their gentle melodies and almost-Godly vocal harmonies, their rendition of the electro-pop jam adds an angelic undertone to the lyrics made famous by London Grammar’s Hannah Reid in the London trio’s collaboration with Disclosure.
