If one thing is for sure, Neil Finn’s much anticipated new release Dizzy Heights delivers, and does so in spades. In true Finn style, this release continues to exploit the blurred lines between familiarity and truly experimental sounds, delivering the quintessential melodic Finn quirk we’ve all come to know and love.
Partnering with producer Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev, The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala) the album was recorded in both Finn’s Roundhead studio in Auckland and Fridmann’s Tarbox studio in upstate New York, no doubt the inspiration for the record’s truly eclectic sound.
From the ethereal swagger of ‘Impressions’, layered in a mix of vocals and strings, to the rhythmic desperation of ‘Better Than TV’, Finn effortlessly serves up a gem of a record, leaving no doubt that he is a master of his craft.
The delightfully surreal ‘Lights Of New York’, a true beauty among a diverse collection, gives way to the disturbingly frantic sound of ‘Divebomber’, showcasing the endless diversity in Finn’s musicality.
A family affair, the record also features Finn’s sons Liam on guitar and Elroy on drums, along with wife Sharon on bass, who co-wrote the three tracks, ‘Pony Ride’, ‘Flying In The Face Of Love’, and ‘Animal vs Human’.
Living up to its name, Dizzy Heights does not disappoint and is sure to become a staple among the Finn faithful.
