Returning after an extended hiatus on the solo front, Delta has carefully constructed his comeback LP with extensive attention to the lyrical detail. The Adelaide bred, mic-wielder’s Pyramid Schemes radiates essence of traditional, hard-hitting hip hop rhythms remanent of early urban flavours.

The first taste of the release, in the form lead tracks ‘Pyramid Schemes’ and ‘Gourmet’, undoubtedly showcase the rhyme-sters technical knack, however a distinct lack of variety on the production front fails to land a killer punch on first listen. An upside of the basic instrumental backings is the ability to decipher the lyrical content without distraction.

This flaw, however, is eclipsed for the better almost right around the corner, with ‘A Madman Roams Tonight’ offering a more polished and refined sound. With samples courtesy of rock icon Peter Tilbrook, the track syndicates the emcees vocal palette with a clever and seamless blues transition.

The release hits its straps without a doubt during ‘No Worries’, which features a refreshing female touch from Candice Monique.  The simplistic beat work complements the soulful choral of Monique, with Delta un-holstering his marquee, punchy brand alongside a bastardised guitar rhythm.

Lazy Grey checks in on the aggressive ‘Occult Wisdom’, ascending the record’s energy levels to a new high. Blow for blow, Delta and Grey power through one of the LP’s most memorable moments for fans of underground hip hop.

Delta’s ability to carve an intriguing sculpture presents Pyramid Schemes to both longtime listeners of the genre, as well as serving as an unique aural introduction for newcomers to the field. Although the release’s production may feature the odd crease, the scope of variety and technical ability on offer vocally sees the slight blemish forgiven.
