My how the worm turns. Forty five years after he performed in front of ‘arty films’ projected by Jonas Mekas and Andy Warhol behind the Velvet Underground as they performed as part of Warhol’s Exploding Plastic Inevitable, Lou Reed is making films.

One could be forgiven for thinking they might involve dark sleazy S&M and drugs considering his penchant for these subjects in his creative pursuits before, but no! Grumpy old Uncle Lou seems to be getting soft in his old age and he’s made a film about an old lady.

He’s got a documentary showing in the Visions du Réel festival in Nyon, Switzerland; which he’s made about his 99 year old cousin Red Shirley. With music naturally composed for it by Reed, the 28 minute film is said to be a moving and affectionate tribute to her on the eve of her 100th birthday.
