Reports filtering in from Sydney last night suggest that The Cult’s Love tour became a case of Love Removal Machine when singer Ian Astbury refused to go on stage. We’ve all heard about ridiculous rock star backstage demands: whether it being Aerosmith wanting a bowl of Smarties with all the brown ones taken out, or Morrissey of The Smiths demanding a small sapling between four and six feet to be placed in his dressing room. It looks like Astbury is about to be added to the annals with last night’s tantrum.
Apparently he’d ordered fish and chips on his rider, showing typical British gastronomic adventurousness and ignoring the fact he no longer fits into his leather pants. Alas, the hapless touring staff overlooked the fact that the delicate Wild Flower IS health conscious after all and wanted grilled fish and chips, a dummy spit eventuating when the battered variety turned up. The whole gig was put on hold while a gopher was sent out to obtain Sydney’s finest grilled fish to placate the Wild Hearted Son.
