With only two singles under their belts, Melbourne-based electronic act Hopium are still somewhat of an enigma. But given the overwhelming beauty of their second track ‘Dreamers’, you get the feeling that’s set to change pretty soon.
‘Dreamers’ is a towering, cinematic electro-pop ballad charged with bombastic intensity and dripping with angst-ridden emotion. The slow-paced verses are ghostly sparse, building with chilling suspense towards the track’s anthemic chorus – a mammoth chorus goes down alongside Sia’s ‘Chandelier’ as one of this year’s most powerful, and most memorable.
With ex-Snakadaktal member Phoebe Lou lending her ghostly vocals, the chorus explodes with colossal-sized synths crashing down in a spectacular trap-like fashion. It’s pure cathartic combustion, and it immediately makes Hopium one of the most exciting names in Australia’s bustling left-field electronic scene.
