Music lovers of Melbourne, have we got the best news for you, you’re getting a brand new live music venue, well, sort of.

One of the city’s most unique and adored cultural hotspots, The Shadow Electric, known for easily some of the best cinema, pop-up gigs, and dance parties around town has announced that its bandroom in the Abbotsford Convent will now become a permanent live music venue

Since its introduction to the live music circuit in 2012, the open-air cinema’s organisers Jay Rayner and David Chestwig have produced over 300 events, gifting the bandroom with the impressive ‘March of the Bands’ program last year, and pre-summer lineup of bands, featuring incredible local performances such as Courtney Barnett’s first sold-out show to the infamous “black-out gig” from World’s End Press.

That’s not to mention the likes of international superstars Kurt Vile and Mac DeMarco rattling the stone-walled venue with their slacker-rock sounds, as well as countless electronica charged Animal’s Dancing parties that has seen the likes of Prins Thomas light the historic venue alight.

Having rightfully earned a reputation as one of the city’s hippest places to dig live sounds, it’s with great excitement that the northside venue has cemented itself a permanent place to grab a beer and check out some of the best local talent in (let’s be honest) one of the most beautiful venues of Melbourne.

“With its unique industrial feel, distinctive bar layout, and intimate atmosphere making it a little something special for music fans to enjoy a night out seeing great acts,” promise The Shadow Electric team, who’ve partnered with the Abbotsford Convent Foundation to ensure it can host gigs full-time.

For the film lovers, don’t worry, there’s great news for you too. The Shadow Electric’s regular open-air cinema, situated next to the bandroom, will return after winter, promising that the projection area will run five nights a week with plenty of beer, popcorn, and most importantly, fantastic films for all.
