If you go and Google ‘Worst Music Video Ever’, you’ll soon find yourself engorged in some absolute pearlers – like this surreal Swedish pop video and this 80s karaoke knock-off. But unless you go digging really deep into the riches of online embarrassments, you won’t find what we think is the new contender for the title of Worst Music Video Of All Time.
It may have nearly 100,000 views on YouTube since it was uploaded two years ago, but we think the following clip deserves to go viral for the amount of cringeworthy moments its crammed into its three-and-a-half minutes of generic 80s hair metal, which comes to us via the eagle-eyed folks at Dangerous Minds.
Where do we begin? Well, with the bizarre wail of the lead singer of Wally World, as the poorly drawn kick drum skin soon reveals. You then get to enjoy a calamitous union of clumsy camerawork and worse lip-synching (to a CD player visible in the sands) from five poorly costumed dad rockers.
From the (bikie) drummer’s lack of oomph and the (counterfeit Slash) guitarist’s lacklustre solo – there’s zero points for effort all round. But special mention to the bizarrely tired rock shapes of frontman Wally ‘World’ Passett.
Combined with the cameos both scripted (a barely-there dancing girl in a bikini – covered in a duffel coat to beat back the cold coastal wind) and unscripted (keep an eye out for several ‘extras’ obliviously wandering through the ‘shoot’), you’ve got a lethally hilarious combination that’s both utterly baffling yet has you wondering if the whole thing is just genius-level parody. In fact, with a bit of Tim & Eric style editing, this could be inverted into the Best Music Video Ever.
We could go on forever but it’s best you just enjoy the awkward parade for yourself. Oh, and for bonus chuckles, be sure to check out the characteristically savage wit of the YouTube commenters. The highlight? “OMG guys, there’s more clichés in here than Spinal Tap.”
