It seems like anyone can get a hold of the tools used by the top self-produced musicians these days, but only some people have the ability to use them effectively. Lanks’ new track, ‘Brave Man’, is a minimalist abyss of atmospheric, sparse vocals, paired with whispers and licks of building guitars.
It’s in a similar vein to the wonderful new breed of toned-down indie electronic music spilling out of Melbourne these days and there’s something about the frantic beat combined with the smoother guitars that leaves you feeling a little restless.
Supported by an up-tempo beat and vague bass line throughout, it doesn’t really hit you until the guitar rolls in at the last minute. It’s soothing: but in an oddly energising way.
