A company based in Portland, Oregon, has opened a new site this week called Rumblefish which allows users to buy songs to legally soundtrack their Youtube videos. When punters buy a song on Friendly Music, they receive the right to modify it and use it to soundtrack their online videos as long as the artist receives a credit and the video for doesn’t fulfill any commercial purpose. This means punters can use it for crappy birthday and wedding videos, so long as they’re ad free and don’t make the user money. At a cost of $1.99, the artist choices aren’t exactly stadium filling names, but they hope to add to the list. It also ensures videos won’t be pulled by Youtube for breaching copyright. While not the most thrilling development in internet licensing, it is also a step forward in addressing artist licensing concerns.
