Mumford & Sons have been in the headlines a bit lately, there’s been comments about them hating their name, they’re opening a pop-bar and serving their own booze in Sydney which is kind of cool, they’re about to drop their third record, however we think this piece of Mumford news is definitely the most interesting.

An interview with Canadian music festival organisers of Calgary Folk Fest via Metronews has revealed how much it costs to book the UK folk-pop turned indie-pop four-piece, and we’ll let you know, it’s a figure that rivals the likes of Fleetwood Mac.

The Canadian music event explained they couldn’t afford to book Mumford & Sons for their annual event because they cost CA$700,000.00 to book per performance.

Yep, you read that correctly, if you’re throwing a music fest and want the indie folksters to charm your audience, it’s going to cost an approximate Aussie figure of $726,000.00, pretty nuts, right?

Kerry Clarke, artistic director of The Calgary Folk Music Festival explained this further, “we’re not getting Mumford & Sons because they cost $700,000 and our artistic budget is $850,000″ she continued “we’re not going to spend most of our budget on one artist.”

In saying that, Clarke & Co. have locked-in the likes of Father John Misty, The Mavericks and Lucinda Williams to headline the event as well as Aussie acts The John Butler Trio and Kim Churchill performing at the festival over July 23 – 26 at Prince’s Island Park.

To be fair, Mumford & Sons two records Sigh No More (2009) and Babel (2012) have both reached multiple platinum status in various countries around the globe, including North America, so an amount tickling seven digits shouldn’t really arrive as such as surprise – although we get it, imagine what you could do with a casual $726,000.00 after playing just one gig.

Comparing Mumford & Sons apparent performance costs with that interesting list compiled by Degy Entertainment and issued byPriceonomics last year would put the band on rough equal amounts as Pearl Jam, The Cure, Fleetwood Mac, Mary J. Blige and many, many more that we can’t afford to have play in our backyard.
