Melbourne’s Superstar are the masters of patience. The two piece have been distilling their sound for almost a decade, yet they only released their debut A Toast to Superstar two years ago, which is now has been followed by the stunning Table For Two.
As our Tone Deaf writer described “Table For Two is a dreamy record full of breezy, slow-burning lo-fi pop. Esther Edquist’s hush vocals are sublime, and they’re complimented beautifully by spacious, languid soundscapes where Kieran Hegarty’s floaty, reverb-soaked guitar washes gently over hum-along key melodies and gentle drum pads.”
With this new LP the duo, made up of Kieran Hegarty (guitar, drum machines) and Esther Edquist (keys, vocals) have built upon their unique sound, with Edquist showcasing her incredible vocal abilities previously masked beneath Hegarty’s dominant guitar work.
To celebrate the release of the record (out now via Bedroom Suck) the duo have given us a track by track run down of the LP which you can check out below.
Cool Memories
Cool Memories was directly inspired by the buildings in Brisbane’s CBD and a lot of the planning, in particular the tiling, of much of the city centre in preparation for the World Expo held there in 1988.
Folding Gold
Folding Gold is about the use of a honey wand and the casual observance of terrific things, the goo that binds us, and in particular, the goo that binds treble to tenor and visa-versa.
Glistening Bliss
Glistening Bliss is a direct reference to a catalogue the guitarist was reading about cruises through the Outer Hebrides at the time of recording, a scene we felt truthfully conveyed the immense weight of fifths.
Intermission
Intermission is self explanatory, really.
The Long Frond
The Long Frond is a dub revision of a melancholy jig first penned between sets during the band’s short-lived incarnation as a “Sunday Roast and Roll” covers act on the eastern RSL circuit.
Slice Of Paradise
Slice of Paradise is Superstar’s most classic move to date, the last song to be written, and yet, formally, also the last song to be heard on the album.
