Homegrown chart-toppers The Veronicas have issued an impassioned plea to Prime Minister Tony Abbott, asking the controversial leader to come down on the right side of history in regards to the issue of same sex marriage.

Yeah, we know, it’s The Veronicas, that annoying sisterly duo from the mid-2000s who had a bunch of hits and then disappeared to live in America and date Billy Corgan (one of them, at least), but their missive to the PM is actually worth hearing, so listen up.

In a video posted to their official Facebook page, sisters Lisa and Jessica Origliasso say the PM has “missed the opportunity to become a world revolutionary leader” by not granting equal marriage rights to the gay community.

“We’ve just arrived back from the USA where same sex marriage has been legalised in all 50 states,” the sisters recount in the clip. “The example set by government is so powerful and so influential, and that’s why we’re speaking to you today.”

“It’s time to align with the growing number of governments who have paved the way for us, and not continue our alignment with governments who persist in restricting equal human rights and social progression for its people and country.”

“Tradition founded upon laws of discrimination and prejudice does not deserve sanctity in the name of history. It’s time to live in a country that recognises all people as equal.”

“We believe in celebrating a diverse Australia. We also believe as humans we are all inherently connected and that our similarities far outweigh our differences.”

As News Corp notes, both sisters marched in a marriage equality rally in Brisbane on the weekend and have long been vocal about equal rights for LBTIQ community, participating in the Wear it with Pride campaign back in 2010.
