If you’re an avid reader of iconic Melbourne street press magazine Beat, you’ll be intimately familiar with their classifieds section. For the most part, it’s a hodgepodge of music teachers looking for work, bands looking for members, and instruments looking for a new home.

However, as Beat write, back in 2006, art director Toby Morris decided to place a single joke ad in the magazine’s classifieds section. The reaction to Morris’ gag ad was so strong that he decided to begin sneaking the joke ads into every issue.

Not only did readers love the ads, it also drew more attention to the classifieds, no doubt proving a boon to that metal guitarist looking to flog his old Ibanez six-string. Of course, two of the ads did lead to investigations by the police and Anti-Terrorism Squad respectively.

Regardless, for the most part the ads were fun, light-hearted, and often hilarious. Beat recently decided to compile some of the best, a few of which you can find below. For the rest of Morris’ ad collection, head on over to his blog.
