We’ve been riding a little bit of a nostalgia wave recently. From our recent ‘Where Are They now’ features on Triple J Unearthed winners and Australian Idol contestants to the hit Aussie songs you’ve forgotten, but definitely remember a piece we loved so much we did twice – it’s been a lot of fun looking back.

One band that had surfaced a few times during our nostalgia trips was ’90s Aussie pop-rock icons Taxiride. During the eyebrow ring and hair gel heydays the rockers dropped gems ‘Get Set’ and ‘Creepin’ Up Slowly’, so we caught up with the band’s frontman Jason Singh (who is currently embarking on his own solo adventure) to chat all things nostalgia and new, including his new single ‘Quicksand’.

Jason is undertaking a very ambitious ‘Jason Singh Project’ which sees the songwriter setting himself a goal of delivering six singles in 12 months. Jason will write, produce and release a new single every eight weeks; taking you on a journey through the formidable music industry terrain, no holds barred. For more info visit his Facebook page.

What It Was Like Going Solo After Being In An Iconic ’90s/ Early ’00s Band

It affects everything because it is the building blocks of who I am. Everything I learnt then, I am putting into practice now. We worked our absolute butts off both prior to success and during, so I guess it shaped me by giving me the work ethic to keep up with an ever-changing music business.

When Jason Went Solo

About 2008. At the time I was in the band the Future Role Models and as much as I loved the band and what we were doing I didn’t feel like it was best reflecting me as an artist. So, on the advice of a friend I went ahead and jumped into going solo.

Proudest Solo Moments

Supporting Mariah Carey at the Day on the Green in last year was definitely a career highlight for me. She is a superstar and giant of the music business, it was awesome to be a part of that. The other stand out is releasing my first solo album, Humannequin. It was a labour of love and as soon as it went out it confirmed for me the kind of artist I was and want to be.

Main Inspirations

My songs are mainly inspired by actual events from myself, friends or family but sometimes they come from movies news stories etc Musically I am inspire by a few modern artists including Sia, Weeknd, Calvin Harris, Troye Sivan and then there are my all time favourite artists including Prince and Michael Jackson.

Is Taxiride Still A Band?

Taxiride in its current form hasn’t been together for 15 years. After that long of a hiatus to even have people remember us is great!

Taxiride Reunion?

It’s great having the original line-up back together after 15 years. The plan is to do between 15-20 shows a year and play to as many people as possible.

Greatest Taxiride Memory!

I would have to say playing two sold out show at Wembley Stadium supporting Tina Turner – pretty hard to top that.

The One Fashion Item From The ’90s That Should Stay There

Happy Pants – chunky and bright material; and hyper colour.

Plans For 2016

Lots of gigs, lots of new songs; Maybe an album and a tour. I will also be continuing my current journey, The Jason Singh Project and delivering on the commitment of six new singles over the next twelve months.

The first single, ‘Quicksand’ was released on 21 October and Single 2: Your Love is on track for a 16 December release. While the Jason Singh Project is both hectic and busy, I’m really enjoying doing something different and unique. Opening up my world to the Fans and sharing the process from the original song idea, to the lyrics, production, mixing and release of a song; it’s great to have them along for the ride.
