The beach boys’ legal team have challenged Katy Perry’s record label, Capitol Records, to give Mike Love and Brian Wilson writing credits and partial royalties for her song ‘California Gurls’. Obviously changing the ‘I’ to a ‘U’ wasn’t enough.

Rondor Music, the Beach Boys label, claim that the song uses the lyric “I wish they all could be California Girls” which appeared on their 1965 hit ‘California Girls’. An industry source told the New York Post “Rondor Music has sent a letter to Capitol on behalf of Mike Love and Brian Wilson, saying Katy has cribbed one of the most famous lyrics in history, so Love and Wilson should be entitled to a writing credit and a portion of the royalties”

This move comes despite Wilson stating that he liked her track, saying “I love her vocal. She sounds very clear and energetic… the melody is infectious.”
