The Childish Gambino/Chance The Rapper dream collab has been on the cards for a long while now, ever since a tweet in 2014 hinted that the pair were working on a joint EP.
Sure, they’ve both been just a little bit busy since the; Gambino has been producing his own amazing records and TV projects left right and centre, and being cast as everyone from Lando Calrissian to Simba, while Chance has just generally been killing it as well with his rapid ascendance to hip hop’s peak and massive result at this year’s Grammy awards.
Images earlier this year sparked rumours that the long-delayed project might be back on the cards, but Gambino has now given us a bit of an update via an interview with REAL 92.3’s Big Boy’s Neighbourhood programme.
As triple j report, the rapper opened up to the hosts about the chances of this thing actually seeing the light of day any time soon – and now we’re not feeling too confident.
“We’ll see what happens, but yeah, we actually sat down in the studio and worked hard for a little bit,” Gambino explains. “We’re both busy [but] when he has, like, a moment when we’ve been sitting down and just working together… [it’s] about catching a vibe.”
He points out that, while in the past he may have been a bit more open to throwing ideas around from a distance, he now needs to work with people face to face – no doubt his standards are just a bit higher these days, so it’s understandable.
“I don’t work with people over email anymore. I think it just doesn’t make good work, but it’s just that we have to find the time to, like, sit down together.”
So, it’s just a matter of two of the world’s most successful and in-demand rappers finding a moment or two to get in the studio together, then. Can’t say we see it happening any time soon, but stranger things have happened.
Check out the full interview below for more talk of his latest record, and all of the upcoming roles and projects that are probably going to keep that dream collab out of our reach for a fair while yet.
