Melbourne duo REMI and Sydney’s talented rapper, singer and poet Sampa The Great are two of the most promising hip hop acts our country has to offer, and we’re glad to report that they’ll be joining forces once again for an exciting new project.
Having already teamed up on REMI’s recent single ‘For Good’, the crew will be hitting the road in June for a co-headline tour, and even making a bit of new music together. The acts are working on a new track named ‘Fire Sign’, which features both Remi and Sampa, but will be released as a single by the other half of REMI, producer Sensible J.
“Not sure when [it’ll be released] but this will be the lead-off song,” he told triple j, describing the record he’s putting together with artists who’ve recorded at the duo’s House of Beige studios in recent times.
“It’s just beats and all my friends who’ve come by… all made quite on-the-fly,” he adds. “I’ve got too many things sitting on my laptop that only Remi, myself, and the people who recorded on it have heard. I can’t just sit on all this stuff, I’ve got to work out a smart way to pop it out.”
A tour is a good way to get the word out, and it’ll be following on with that relaxed, collaborative spirit – if all goes to plan.
“We’ll all end up on stage together for the finale,” Sampa told triple j, while Remi added “It might be because we’re putting out a fire.”
The acts will take turns headlining each night, but other than that it’ll be a pretty relaxed affair, Remi explains.
“It is literally just some fam hanging out… bring that family vibe to the shows so that everybody feels comfortable, feels safe, and hang up any hang-ups they got in their normal lives and leave them at the door. Hopefully they don’t have to pick them up on the way out.”
REMI producer Sensible J, meanwhile, is just stoked to be able to watch Sampa do her thing, adding”I’m a huge fan of Sampa so it’s kind of selfish, I get to watch six or seven shows in a month!”
With the work Sampa’s put out in the last couple of years, we can’t blame him, and this is definitely a tour not to be missed – check out the dates below.
