“Words are like weapons, they wound sometimes”, Cher warned us in her 1989 hit ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’, which is why she had nothing but nice words to say as she accepted her Billboard Icon Award – dressed in her iconic leather jacket, barely-there mesh top, and knee-high boots. And let’s not forget that hair, either.
The singer celebrated an amazing 53-year career by thanking both her mother and first husband Sonny Bono for making her feel special. “And really there was nothing about me that said I was going to be special,” she added – a statement which is clearly untrue.
“I’ve been doing it for 53 years. This is not an applause thing. I’m 71 yesterday,” she quipped. “Yes. And I can do a five-minute plank – just saying.”
