Just last month King Gizzard revealed that their third album of the year, Sketches of Brunswick East, was in the can and set to drop “at any point”. Now, we know when that point is, and it’s thankfully very soon.
As Stereogum report (translating an interview by French outlet Konbini), the band have set a date of August 25 – only a handful of weeks away, for those of us who haven’t had our morning coffee yet.
The band recently revealed that the record is a collab effort with Mild High Club frontman Alexander Brettin, and with the band promising a total of four LPs before the year’s through, we don’t blame them for getting a bit of help on this one.
“[Mild High Club] came over and played Gizzfest with us in December and [Alex] just stayed at my house for a few weeks,” frontman Stu Mackenzie told triple j last week.
“We were sending each other these really rough, vague ideas before that… usually just a chord progression or a melody – these interesting, chilled, jazzy, loose improvised pieces.
“Then we spent up until a month ago going back and forward, changing them, cutting things out… finished the record that way.”
Now, it’s done, and we can mark the end of the month on our calendars. With Flying Microtonal Banana and Murder of the Universe both narrowly missing out on the band’s first #1 album on the ARIA charts, maybe third time’s the charm for 2017.
