If we’ve managed to ascertain anything over the last couple of years, it’s the fact that despite their relatively young ages, the kids from the Netflix sci-fi series Stranger Things are a hugely talented bunch. Now, a recent performance has seen a classic hit from rock pioneers The Velvet Underground covered by one of the show’s main stars.
Early in 2017, we spoke about how Finn Wolfhard, better known to Stranger Things fans as Mike, was rather fond of ’80s classics. In addition to having performed hits from the likes of Guns N’ Roses and New Order, he had also recorded a Mac DeMarco cover with his band Calpurnia.
“I love ’80s and ’90s music,” he said at the time. “I love Nirvana, Joy Division and New Order – older alternative, I guess. There’s a scene where they use ‘Atmosphere’ by Joy Division. Charlie Heaton’s character is crying. It’s perfect,” he continued, adding, “I want to somehow get an album or EP out.”
Now, as Rolling Stone reports, Wolfhard and Calpurnia performed at Rough Trade NYC in Brooklyn, New York on Friday night. In addition to performing a bunch of classic covers, including Twin Peaks’ ‘Butterfly’, the Pixies’ ‘Where Is My Mind’, and Weezer’s ‘El Schorco’, the band also decided to tackle a classic song from The Velvet Underground.
“This one goes out to Lou Reed,” stated Finn Wolfhard, paying tribute to the group’s late frontman, before launching into a cover of ‘Here She Comes Now’, from their 1968 record White Light/White Heat.
Currently, Calpurnia are set to record an and EP and album in the near future, and rumours have swirled about the group potentially making their way down to Australia for a boutique festival at some point. Either way, considering that Stranger Things‘ cast is full of some hugely talented youngsters, we can’t wait to see what their respective futures hold.
