In an interview with SiriusXM today, Robert Smith discussed The Cure’s newly announced induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and shared more details about when we can expect a new album from the group. Listen to audio of Smith confirming the first album from The Cure in over a decade below.
The fact that the group were recording new music was no secret. Smith had previously said that the other bands playing at his Meltdown festival earlier this year had inspired him to get back to writing. At the festival, the group’s mammoth headlining set featured performances of two brand new songs.

Stereogum reports that in the SiriusXM interview, Smith told Mark Goodman and Alan Light “We’re going in about six weeks time to finish up what will be our first album in more than a decade.” Adding “It’s very exciting times for us all around.”
Whilst no official release date has been set for the album, if they’re finishing it off in the new year, it looks likely we could have a whole bunch of new music from The Cure by the middle of the year. 2019 will also mark 40 years of the band, and Smith has previously said “It’s the 40th anniversary of the first album in 2019. I thought, if I don’t have something out new that year, that’s it for me. I don’t think The Cure will ever release another album.”
On top of the new album, The Cure are set to headline 20 festivals next year as part of their 40th anniversary celebrations. They toured Australia back in 2016 after a 3 hour headlining set at Splendour In The Grass. Check out their last single – 2008’s “The Perfect Boy” below.
