New Zealand thrash-metal trailblazers Alien Weaponry have been carving their niche with their fusion of Māori culture and metal music.

The band, comprised of brothers Lewis de Jong (vocals and guitar), and Henrey de Jong (drums) and bassist Ethan Trembath, have spent the past decade incorporating Te Reo Māori with their monolithic metal stylings.

Their songs explore themes of colonization and Māori oppression. Take their track ‘Rū Ana Te Whenua’, a bone-crushing, 5-minute epic, written completely in te reo that paints a battle between Māori and British soldiers at Pukehinahina.
