Are you a young musician who has what it takes to hit the big time? Then you might want to look into becoming part of this year’s triple j Unearthed High competition!
Ever since 1995, triple j’s Unearthed initiative has been one of the best ways for young, independent musicians to gain exposure on a wider scale.
While acts like Grinspoon, Killing Heidi, Vance Joy, and Missy Higgins are just some of the Unearthed success stories, the last decade has seen the initiative focusing on younger musicians, helping those high school artists get the exposure they need.
First kicking off back in 2008, Unearthed High has seen school-aged musicians discovered and brought onto the national stage. Artists like Japanese Wallpaper, Asta, Gretta Ray, Arno Faraji, and Stonefield all owe their massive levels of fame to the program, as does 2018 winner KIAN, who has been going from strength to strength ever since.
“Winning Unearthed High 100% sparked a major change in my life,” explained KIAN. “The day I found out I had won I was feeling a lot of things. Excitement, happiness, wonder, embarrassment (because I got pranked at my school).
“But I also felt as though something happened, a piece of my puzzle that is life clicked into place and I felt the beginning of something that was going to impact my life forever.”

Now, Unearthed High is back for another year, and it’s looking for the latest Aussie success story to help storm the charts.
So how do you enter? Simple! All you have to do is ensure you’ve uploaded an original piece of music to the triple j Unearthed website before midnight on Monday, July 29th.
The winner of this year’s comp will then be flown to the triple j studio to record, mix, or master their music, and will then score some sweet airtime on both the triple j and triple j Unearthed stations.
This year’s winner will also receive invaluable music industry advice, and could even see triple j visit them at their school.
Also, the best Unearthed High entry from an Indigenous artist, as well as being eligible for the major prize, will win a songwriting workshop at their school by the APRA AMCOS Songmakers program and ongoing mentorship from the Association of Artist Managers (AAM).
Keep an eye on the triple j Unearthed website in the coming months, where the best entries will be available for your listening pleasure, allowing you to get a sneak peek at the new crop of school-aged musical talent!
