Back in May, we shared a live busking clip of an extremely talented 17-year-old from Melbourne – Ryan Schmidt.
Now, Ryan is back with his debut single ‘Big Roomy Beds’.
The track was entirely produced and played by Schmidt – all seven instruments – an achievement in itself. ‘Big Roomy Beds’ will be out this Friday, but today we are exclusively premiering it right here.
In a Tone Deaf exclusive, Schmidt said the track was “born from the teenage angst associated with VCE and the morning grind to actually get out of bed and rock up to class,”
“I’m quite good at my schooling. Being with someone that you love, and fulfilling the things you truly want to do, rather than listening to the same thing day in day out within the confinements of a classroom is much more inviting,” he said.
Despite usually being on time for school each day, one particular morning involved quite a different timeline of events. “I’m usually very punctual but on one particular morning I had slept through my alarm and woken up at 9:45am,” he continues.
This meant he was already 45 minutes late. “The scramble to prepare myself meant sculling my coffee, chucking on my uniform and half locking the front door. This culminates in a frantic rush to get on the 517 bus so that I got to school as soon as possible.”
Lyrically, the song takes a very comedic approach to a far from ideal morning scenario. “The lyrics take a very tongue in cheek approach to the situation. [The track] ultimately takes the piss out of the idea that I was worried about being late for school, because I slept in dreaming of something else,” the singer-songwriter said.
And that’s how ‘Big Roomy Beds’ was born.
‘Big Roomy Beds’ is out this Friday June 21. To find out more about Ryan Schmidt, visit his official page.
